Ralf Schumacher

Ralf Schumacher Born 1975, Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany
Being Michael Schumacher's brother may have helped Ralf get to F1 but since then it has done him few favours - the sport is tough enough without people constantly comparing you to arguably the greatest driver of all time.

Schumacher had a reputation as a hothead and a brat early in his career - witness him turfing team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella off in his third race and throwing a tantrum when he was forbidden from overtaking Damon Hill at Spa in 1998.

The German has matured since moving to Williams but, although he is devastatingly quick on his day, lacks the consistency and motivational skills of big brother.

1975 Born in Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany.

1994 Finished fourth in the German Formula 3 Championship behind Jorg Muller and Alexander Wurz in his first season car racing. Like brother Michael before him, he raced for Willi Weber's WTS racing team.

1995 Finished runner-up in the German Formula 3 Championship to Argentinian driver Norbert Fontana.

1996 Won the Japanese Formula 3000 title at the season's final race, with Fontana finishing in second place.

1997 Signed up by the Jordan Formula 1 team, impressing the motor racing world with his raw speed. Best finish was third in the Argentinian Grand Prix, albeit in a race in which he showed his wild side by taking out his team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.

1998 Joined at Jordan by former world champion Damon Hill, he was the first of this duo to score points, albeit as late as the ninth round at Silverstone. A second place, behind Hill, in the Belgian Grand Prix and then a third place in the Italian Grand Prix propelled Ralf to tenth in the end-of-season rankings.

1999 Moved to Williams, trading rides with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and shone in a car hampered by its less-than-powerful Supertec engine. However, third place first time out in Melbourne was matched by a similar result at Silverstone. But these were topped with second place at Monza that helped Ralf rank sixth in a season in which he impressed everyone with new-found maturity.

2000 Drives another quick and consistent season for the new Williams BMW combination. Finishes fifth in the world championship and scores a third place on the new BMW engine's debut in Melbourne.

2001 Takes maiden grand prix win at San Marino, adding further victories at Montreal and Hockenheim. Fourth overall in championship.

2002 Wins in Malaysia but Williams have no answer to the brilliance of the Ferrari F2002. Finishes fourth in championship behind team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya.

2003 Fifth overall in championship with two wins. Suffers major accident in testing at Monza which causes him to miss Italian GP.
