Michael Schumacher

Born 1969, Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany

What else is there to write about Formula 1's first six-time world champion? The German's incredible achievements simply speak for themselves.

Like Senna before him, Schumacher may be revered by his fans but his tough streak has also made him enemies. Few forget him taking Damon Hill out to win the 1994 title and trying the same trick again on Jacques Villeneuve three years later.

But like him or loath him, Schumacher deserves immense credit for his part in transforming Ferrari from no-hopers to worldbeaters. It will take somebody very special to match, let alone beat, his tally of records.

Born in Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany.

Started racing karts.

German Junior Kart Champion.

German Kart Champion.

Won Formula Koenig series, then was second to Mika Salo in European FF1600.

Runner-up in German Formula 3 Championship, finishing a point behind Karl Wendlinger and equal with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

German Formula 3 Champion, also beating Mika Hakkinen to win Macau Formula 3 GP. Raced for Mercedes in World Sports Car Championship.

Won sports car race at Autopolis for Mercedes and was second in a Japanese Formula 3000 race. Then made Formula 1 debut with Jordan, then was poached directly to join Benetton and started scoring points immediately.

Stayed on with Benetton and scored first win on anniversary of his debut at the Belgian GP. Three third place finishes helped him end season third overall.

One win, in Portugal, and eight other top-three finishes helped him finish fourth overall for Benetton.

Won first four races and set fought with Damon Hill after Senna's death. Was disqualified from the British and Belgian GPs on assorted charges. Scored four further wins and won title when he took Hill out of the final race.

Became World Champion again, this time scoring nine wins for Benetton.

Moved to Ferrari and did well to wind up third overall with two wins as car was not the pick of the pack and seldom finished.

Criticised for swerving into rival Jacques Villeneuve's Williams in the final race. Had his second place in the championship taken away. Otherwise embellished his reputation by winning five Grands Prix in a less than competitive Ferrari.

Took title race with Mika Hakkinen right to the final round, but his six wins just weren't enough, with a stall on the grid forcing him to start from the rear of the grid. A blow-out compounded his misery after he'd rocketed up to third.

Won at Imola and Monaco, but season was thrown off course when he broke a leg at Silverstone. Missed six races and yet still ranked fifth overall.

Fifth season for Ferrari. It finally comes together and Michael achieves his dream of winning the world championship with the prancing horse, taking a record equalling nine wins along the way.

Adds a second world title, again scoring 11 wins along the way. Exceeds Alain Prost's record of 51 grand prix wins at Spa.

Seals a third championship on the bounce in record time as Ferrari dominate. Finishes on the podium in every race, including a record 11 victories.

Clinches a record sixth world title, despite tougher opposition than in previous seasons. Scores six wins - no one else manages more than two.
