Heinz-Harald Frentzen

Born 1967, Münchengladbach, Germany

Heinz-Harald Frentzen arrived in F1 with a big reputation - he was billed as the only man Michael Schumacher was afraid of - but has never quite fulfilled that promise.

Frentzen may have matched and beaten Schuey in the junior formulae but F1 proved a different kettle of fish. Given his big chance by the all-conquering Williams team in 1997, he was out-psyched by team-mate Jacques Villeneuve and won just once.

A sensitive soul, he finally found his niche at Jordan and was a superb third in the 1999 championship. But he parted acrimoniously with the Irish team midway through the 2001 season.

1967 Born in Münchengladbach, Germany.

1984 German Karting Champion.

1987 Runner-up in German Formula Ford 2000 series.

1988 German Formula Opel Champion. Also limited Formula Opel Euroseries programme, beating Mika Hakkinen in the season's final two races.

1989 Runner-up in German Formula Three series behind Karl Wendlinger, but equal with Michael Schumacher.

1990 Formula 3000 with Eddie Jordan Racing, but fifth at Enna was his best result. Was a member of Mercedes junior squad, coming second at Donington.

1991 Struggled with a Vortex Lola in Formula 3000, taking two fifths and a sixth.

1992 Headed to Japan to resurrect career, racing both in Formula 3000 and in sports cars, and claiming a third in each series.

1993 Stayed on in Japanese Formula 3000 and ended up ninth overall after finishing second at Fuji. Was offered a chance to test Formula 1 Sauber.

1994 Formula 1 debut with Sauber, qualifying fifth on debut in the Brazilian GP. Was fifth in following race, at Japan's TI Circuit, but collected points on only three more occasions, with fourth in the French GP the high point of his year.

1995 Went better in second season to reach podium by finishing in third place in Italian GP. Ranked ninth overall.

1996 Scored a brace of fourth places early in the season, but then seemed to lose the plot and team-mate Johnny Herbert took control at Sauber.

1997 Dream move to Williams didn't achieve what he and the team had hoped. For, despite winning the San Marino GP, he never won again and was ranked third overall behind Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher, but was promoted to second when his compatriot had his position annulled.

1998 Like Villeneuve, he struggled with Mecachrome engine and failed to win. Third place in the opening race was his best result and he ranked equal seventh.

1999 Proved a revelation when he moved to Jordan. Second place in opening race heralded great things and he won the French and Italian Grands Prix to finish up third overall. Totally overshadowed team-mate Damon Hill.

2000 Stayed on with Jordan, this time with Jarno Trulli as his team-mate. A big disappointment after the highs of 1999 and slumped to eighth in the championship.

2001 Falls out with Eddie Jordan midway through the season and is sacked. Moves on to Prost. Finishes season 12th overall with six points.

2002 Prost goes into liquidation so Frentzen moves on to Arrows. They too hit financial problems and fail to compete in the second half of the season.

2003 Returns to Sauber. 11th overall in the championship with 13 points, including a final podium at Indinapolis. Announces his retirement from F1 to embark on new career in the DTM.
