David Coultard

Born 1971, Twynholm, Scotland
Most drivers are lucky to get their hands on a top car for a year or two – David Coulthard has had one almost all his career.

The Scot was given his F1 break by world champions Williams in 1994 after Ayrton Senna was killed at Imola. When he moved to McLaren in 1996, his arrival coincided with the team’s renaissance.

For most of his career, Coulthard has been outshone by team-mates Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen and, most recently, Kimi Raikkonen. But he has claimed some brilliant wins too, most notably in 1999 and 2000 at his home race at Silverstone.

1971 Born in Twynholm, Scotland.

1983 Won Scottish Junior Karting title.

1984 Scottish Junior Karting Champion.

1986 Scottish Open Karting Champion.

1987 British Super 1 and Scottish Open Karting Champion.

1989 Third in Formula Ford Festival. Won McLaren/Autosport Young Driver award.

1990 Moved up to Formula Vauxhall with Paul Stewart Racing and finished fourth in Euroseries behind Rubens Barrichello after breaking a leg in a shunt at Spa.

1991 Runner-up to Barrichello in British Formula 3 series, winning Marlboro Masters and Macau international races.

1992 Graduated to Formula 3000 with Paul Stewart Racing, but was only ninth overall, peaking with third at the final two races.

1993 Formula 3000 again, this time with Pacific, winning race at Enna-Pergusa and being ranked third overall behind Olivier Panis and Pedro Lamy.

1994 Was propelled into Formula 1 after Ayrton Senna died at Imola thanks to his role as Williams test driver. Finished second in Portugal then was replaced by Nigel Mansell for the last three races, yet still ranked eighth.

1995 Stayed on with Williams and lost his maiden win when he picked up a stop-go penalty in British GP. Eventually put one over team leader Damon Hill to win the Portuguese GP. Could have won Australian GP, too, but crashed. Third overall.

1996 Moved to McLaren and slipped to seventh overall after retiring too often to feature higher in the rankings. Best result was second at Monaco.

1997 Started with a bang by winning in Australia to give McLaren its first win since 1993. Also won the Italian GP and was second in the final round to be ranked equal third overall after Schumacher's runner-up placing was annulled.

1998 Third overall in the World Championship again for McLaren, scoring just one win in the San Marino GP compared to the eight wins that took team-mate Mika Hakkinen to the world title.

1999 Won the British and Belgian GPs, but fell to fourth overall after a string of retirements as Hakkinen again raced on to the World Championship.

2000 Fifth season with McLaren. Desperate to emerge from Hakkinen's shadow, does well to win three races and look like a title challenger at one point. Fades towards the end of the season and finishes third in the championship.

2001 Enjoys probably the best season of his career, but still has to settle for a distant second in the championship as Michael Schumacher dominates.
Takes superb victories in Brazil and Austria.

2002 Mika Hakkinen's retirement means a new team-mate for Coulthard - youngster Kimi Raikkonen. Generally quicker than the Finn but has to settle for fifth in the championship, despite Monaco win.

2003 Raikkonen's coming of age effectively relegates Coulthard to team number two. Wins season-opener at Melbourne but it's all downhill from there and eventually finishes seventh in the championship.
